Investigating At 10 Years Old — my first ghost hunt

Hope everybody is enjoying the Holidays so far:) Go grab some hot cocoa and get comfy… Shall we begin?

First, I will start off by saying that, whether you believe in him or not, Santa really does comes every year. It doesn’t matter how old you are. You just need to look for him, and you will find him… This time of year really is such a great time of peace and hope, isn’t it? Mind you, we are all also rushing about to complete what’s on our lists. Yes, Christmas has become commercialized over the years. But we seem to still take a moment out to visit loved ones. And we still, hopefully, take a moment out to give what we can to those less fortunate. It’s also such a pretty time, with all the lights guiding us through the darkness.

Speaking of the darkness, most of you already know that I started investigating the paranormal when I was a young girl. In fact, I was just ten years old when I started. Most assume that it was my great-uncle the pioneer UFO investigator who got me into investigating the paranormal (the official website dedicated to him is here). But at the time, 10 years old, I wasn’t even aware that he was a UFOlogist — all I knew was that he had this “spooky” interest in UFOs (click here to see the cool necklace I made using the soil from one of his UFO landing site investigations). My family was a little “different”, sort of like the Adams Family — sort of, which I wrote about here. But, believe it or not, my family background wasn’t what influenced me to become a paranormal investigator — not directly anyway. I’ve been asked on numerous occasions “how did you get into ghost investigating?”, so here is my story…

The house I lived at in Toronto was rife with activity. Doors would open and close on their own, footsteps heard walking up and down the stairs, voices heard throughout the house, etc… My grandmother, who lived with my mother and I at the time, also witnessed the activity that my mother and I experienced. My grandmother, a staunch Catholic, had the priest over our house many times to do exorcisms and blessings on the house (later on, when I was 22, the Catholic Church put me through an official exorcism which I wrote about here).

I will never forget standing in my living room at just ten years old, staring at the priest and thinking how “weird” it was to have him in our house — doesn’t he live in the Church? OMG, what if he goes in my bedroom? Is he going to go in my bedroom? Yup, in my room he went, spraying holy water everywhere he went. I remember the priest coming over many times for this purpose.

I also remember that nobody really had answers that appealed to me. So, off to the library I would go to study “ghosts”. Back then all the books on the paranormal were kept in the basement — and they were few and far between, not many at all! I remember coming across scary entries in encyclopedias about demons — OMG I hope the priest doesn’t find any of those in my room!! I quickly passed over “those” pages. I was so excited, and in awe, to come across a book that spoke about “EVP”. What is this EVP? I read all I could about it. Then I rushed home and begged my grandmother to let me borrow her cassette tape recorder. I waited until I was all alone in the house, then I rushed down into the basement as fast as I could. I will get some of that EVP in the basement for sure! Yep, I’m gonna finally be able to talk to these ghosts in my house!

Before I knew it I was EVP-ing. I pressed record on the tape recorder, and I remember saying something to the effect of “Can you hear me?”. Then I waited, just like the book said to do. Then, I pressed stop and quickly pressed rewind. Then I stopped and thought “Oh god, what if they spoke back?” It took me a bit, but I finally pressed play. And to my shock and utter amazement, I heard voices talking back to me. For the life of me, I cannot remember what they said. And I can’t tell you how much I wish I had kept those recordings!! I say recordings plural because after that I kept doing EVP sessions and kept getting a woman and man talking on them to me. Sometimes they would even talk to each other, which I found amusing. But to me, at just ten years old, this was normal to get ghosts on your tape recorder. After all, the book said you could get them on your tapes. So, every house must have them. Eventually, I even got BORED of all the talking ghosts, so I just started singing on the tapes instead and gave up recording EVPs in my basement! Imagine that! Well, when you’re a kid you just don’t know any better… And besides, I had gotten a new microphone and one day I was going to be a great singer… Uggg!!!!

But, I did end up spending almost every day that first summer in the library reading everything and anything about the paranormal. Eventually, I even worked up my nerve to read about all the demons that I wouldn’t read about before. I remember my friends getting mad at me because I wouldn’t go bike riding with them. All I wanted to do was “play with those ghosts” they would say. But after a while, some of them called me to say that they had a friend who needed me to come over right away because they think they might have a ghost in their house. So off I went .. to investigate… And it never stopped.

And to this day, I still get people asking me to come over to their house because they think they might have a ghost in their house. It just never stopped… Word gets out quickly….

Thanks for reading:) I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday!! Ho Ho Ho!! xxx

i really like this. I heard voices when I was about 13 and always thought my parents were watching tv in the next room. They weren’t. It happened all the time and I never thought about it until I became interested in the paranormal several years later when I saw ghosts at a friend’s house at 18. Been interested ever since

I started believing in ghosts when I was about 6. We lived in a house that had a lot of strange activity. Doors would open and close on their own. We would hear footsteps and at night you could hear what sounded like mumbling coming from the basement. I was always afraid of the basement. You always felt like someone was breathing down your neck.
I didn’t start believing in demons until the movie The Exorcist came out. I was from a family that wasn’t very religious so demons never crossed my mind. But that movie changed my mind. So now I believe in everything from the Loch Ness monster to Santa Claus. So once you start believing and approach things with an open mind you too may just see what really goes bump in the night kiddies.

Great story! And ten years old…I definitely wouldn’t have the nerve to start in a basement when there was paranormal activity going on in the house. Love hearing about how you started out! I hope we get to hear about it some more.

I didn’t believe in ghosts when I was a child because to me the only spirits were the Holy Spirit and demons! That’s what I was raised to believe. I want to thank you for being such a cool and accessible celebrity. You almost always respond to my tweets and that’s awesome! AGAPE We love PHI! MC!

Thank you, that’s very kind. It’s amazing how popular ghosts have become today since we were kids. We had Star Wars and Poltergiest, and that’s really about it. Oh yeah, and E.T…Have a great day:)

    Dear Michelle,

I, too, started investigating at age 10….after I had my first UFO sighting at age 9.

Pretty neat is the fact that I’m not the only one, 🙂

Hi Michel, where were you?!? You could have been a part of my posse!!!! ha ha!! You would have loved Uncle. I always believed in UFOs and extraterrestrials, but they scared the crap out of me so I left that up to him. Then he passed away and I received his files, now look at me right into UFOs. Funny how things work out sometimes eh? Cheers my friend:)
